Department of Computer Science

The Computer Science specialization at Polytech Lyon is dedicated to training engineers who can meet the challenges of digital transformation in a rapidly evolving technological and societal context.

Program Overview

The program provides strong foundations in software development, information systems, data engineering, and artificial intelligence, while emphasizing responsible digital practices, sustainable development, and corporate social responsibility. Through project-based learning and real-world applications, students develop the ability to design, implement, deploy, and maintain complex computing systems. Graduates are prepared to lead innovative projects and adapt to emerging fields such as Agentic-AI, Data Science, Big Data, Industry 4.0, and the Internet of Things, addressing the evolving needs of industry and public institutions.

The Computer Science specialization at Polytech Lyon is structured around four core competencies that are representative of the activities of a Computer Science Engineer:
  • Developing robust and efficient software applications
  • Leading and managing IT projects
  • Designing and implementing data-driven and AI–based solutions
  • Setting up, operating, and maintaining information systems and IT infrastructures.

Research

Polytech Lyon fosters close collaborations with leading research laboratories, including LIRIS (Laboratoire d’InfoRmatique en Image et Systèmes d’information) and ERIC (Entrepôts, Représentation et Ingénierie des Connaissances). Students benefit from this rich research environment in the Lyon area, engaging in projects and internships that expose them to the latest developments in Computer Science.

Those interested in advanced research can pursue a double-degree program by combining their engineering studies with the Lyon1 Master’s programs in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. These double-degree programs offer excellent opportunities to prepare for doctoral studies at Lyon1’s doctoral school INFOMATHS or elsewhere, preparing students for cutting-edge research careers.

Assesment Methods

The Computer Science program relies on continuous assessment to evaluate both academic knowledge and professional competencies. Students are assessed through a combination of individual and group practical work, supervised projects, online quizzes, and written examinations that measure their theoretical understanding. Professional skills are evaluated through real-world case studies and projects proposed by industry partners or faculty members, requiring written reports and oral presentations.

Internships and work-study periods in companies or research laboratories are formally assessed through the submission of a thesis or report and a final oral defense.

In addition, students engage in self-assessment to reflect on their progression in terms of skills acquisition.

These diverse and rigorous assessment methods ensure that graduates are well prepared for professional engineering practice.

Career Opportunities

Graduates from Polytech Lyon’s Computer Science specialization benefit from strong employability and access to a wide range of career opportunities across the digital sector. They work in digital services companies, IT departments and information systems divisions within sectors such as banking and insurance, transportation, energy, networks, and telecommunications, as well as in consulting firms, software publishers, and industrial or scientific research and development.

Typical positions include software and application engineer, data engineer, IT project manager, DevOps engineer, IT architect (software or cybersecurity), and business intelligence or ERP consultant.

Graduate employment surveys conducted over the past three years indicate an employment rate above 90%. The program benefits from partnerships with leading international companies including ATOS, Cap Gemini, CGI, Logica, Siemens, Sopra, Talan, Volvo Trucks, and Worldline. These outcomes reflect the program’s strong alignment with industry needs and its emphasis on practical skills, adaptability, and innovation in a rapidly evolving digital environment.
