Mechanical Engineering Department

The Mechanical Engineering Department at Polytech Lyon is dedicated to training engineers capable of addressing the major challenges facing modern industry, such as energy transition, sustainable manufacturing, and the integration of innovative technologies. With a solid foundation in both theoretical and applied mechanics, students are equipped with the skills needed to design, model, and optimize mechanical systems. The program emphasizes innovation, adaptability, and a multidisciplinary approach, preparing graduates for impactful careers across diverse sectors.

Program Overview

This 5-year Mechanical Engineering program at Polytech Lyon provides students with a comprehensive education in mechanics, covering areas such as fluid and solid mechanics, materials science, and energy systems. Students gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge software for computer-aided design (CAD), simulation, and multi-physics modeling. The curriculum fosters both scientific expertise and practical skills, enabling students to tackle real-world industrial problems, from concept design to production. The program also integrates sustainability, encouraging students to consider environmental and societal impacts in their engineering solutions.

Research

Polytech Lyon fosters close collaborations with leading research institutions and laboratories, including LabTAU (Laboratory of Therapeutic Applications of Ultrasound), LBMC (Biomechanics and Impact Mechanics Laboratory), LMC2 (Laboratory of Composite Materials for Construction) and LMFA (Fluid Mechanics and Acoustics Laboratory). Students benefit from this rich research environment in the Lyon area, engaging in projects and internships that expose them to the latest developments in mechanics, materials, and energy systems.

Those interested in advanced research can pursue a double-degree programme by combining their engineering studies with the UCBL Master's programmes in: Biomechanics, Fluids and Energetics Mechanics and Dynamical Systems and Structures. This double-degree programme offers excellent opportunities to prepare for doctoral studies at UCBL's doctoral school MEGA or elsewhere, preparing students for cutting-edge research careers.

Assessment Methods

The Mechanical Engineering program employs continuous assessment to ensure that students achieve the required competencies. Evaluation methods include written and oral exams, practical work, online tests, and problem-solving exercises. Additionally, students are assessed through real-world projects and internships, with feedback provided through detailed evaluation grids and oral presentations. For students with disabilities, specialized support is available to ensure equal access to assessments. These rigorous evaluation processes prepare students for the demands of professional engineering practice and lifelong learning.

Career Opportunities

Graduates from Polytech Lyon's Mechanical Engineering department have access to a wide range of career paths in industries such as energy, transportation, aerospace, and manufacturing. They may pursue roles in research and development, design and engineering, production, and project management. The strong technical and leadership skills acquired during their studies enable them to work in dynamic environments, driving innovation and efficiency in the companies they join. Whether leading projects in robotics, renewable energy, or mechanical design, Polytech Lyon engineers are prepared to meet the demands of tomorrow’s industries.

Active industrial partners with the Department include large companies such as Renault Trucks (automotive industry), Areva, EDF, Framatome and IFPEN (energy/renewable energy sector), Eurocopter and Airbus (aeronautics), Carrier (manufacturing), ASML (semi-conductors), etc. as well as a number of smaller companies around Lyon and beyond.

More than 80% of our graduates find a job within less than 6 months, whilst 8% pursue higher degree education and research programmes! [Statistics from 2024]
